Untitled, jellyfish

This watercolour was made in 2012. It was exhibited at my solo exhibition Hidden, Unseen, Unknown in October 2013. I have created this jellyfish using delicate watercolour brush marks, representing the ephemeral aspects of this animal. Without directly representing water, one can imagine the sea swirling around this creature. The ocean is still a place of wonder and awe, full of creatures like these. It continues to hold many secrets.

Lost

Lost is inspired by the world below in the deep sea. It explores the theme of unconventional beauty and the irrational fears of the abyss that are ever present in the human psyche. I have tried to capture the anxiety people tend to feel with the hidden, the unseen and the unknown. I aim to raise awareness of these bizarre ocean creatures and try to make others realise their impact on this unique environment. In Lost the jellyfish appears to be caught in the watery mass seeping from the rocks below, swirling without control. Mesmerisingly still, yet turbulent.

Searching

Searching was created for my solo exhibition Hidden, Unseen, Unknown in October of 2013. This watercolour on rag paper portrays a creature that dwells beneath the waves in an unknown sea of blue. The jellyfish is floating, looming from a predominantly unseen world.

Adrift series

The Adrift series was made specifically for my solo exhibition Hidden, Unseen, Unknown in October 2013 at the Kingston Arts Centre G3 Artspace in Melbourne. They are intaglio prints on cotton rag paper. They are made using predominantly aquatint and etching techniques. They are both 24 x 24 cm (image size) and are both editions of 10.

The idea behind the Adrift series was to embody the exact meaning behind the title, to relay an exact emotion I was feeling at the time, a feeling of floating without control, of feeling as though you’re lacking aim, direction and stability. The directional marks in the background of Adrift are used to emphasise this state of feeling.

Adrift II aims to have the feeling of slow movement. This work was made with the idea to display a feeling of being anchored and yet at the same time a sense of floating and moving with a lack of control, yet not helplessly but serenely.
